Living la Vida Fearless

The Walk of 1000 km begins with the first step

It's another day of snow....give me a break for goodness sake. I'm so tired of this. I dressed for the weather and made my way out for the first 5 km of the day. I like to break this into two pieces, 5 km first and then, later in the day, 2km. It seems more manageable that way. The lake was absolutely stormy and wavy and it was quite nice to be out despite the weather. It also occurred to me that I will only be able to walk with the puppy for another few days as my daughter arrives home soon and the puppy will be going with her. I had a good cry over that: I'll miss this dog, she's amazing and loving and just such a good dog. I have now walked 7 km for 6 days which is 42 km...that means I am only 952 km short of my 1000 km goal....getting closer..Well, that's it for now, back to it later, Living la vida fearless, Jan

Walk Softly and Carry a Big Stick...the walk continues

The Walk continues. Today is the fourth day of the walk. I have completed 7 km each day which means I only have 972 km to go between now and the Fall equinox. I have made a discovery. People who drive cars don't much like people who use the roads that don't have sidewalks, for themselves to walk on. I sometimes walk along a lovely street near my house that is covered in old trees, big old and new homes, large yards and the river running behind. It's a well used street and it does not have any sidewalks. That makes it a challenge for a person who walks but I wasn't concerned the first day. I am now and I want to keep walking along here. I saw a movie a long time ago called Walking Tall. The words "walk softly and carry a big stick" stuck with me: I'm not sure why. I am beginning to think that I may need to do just that on my walks. When I was out today I had two cars come really close to me and one of them was close enough that I could actually touch it with my hand. (I had put my hand out to make sure they didn't hit me.) It's not like I'm taking up a lot of the road: I get over as far as I can and make sure the cars can pass with ease. It's almost as if they just don't care that I'm there, and, in fact, think perhaps that I have no right to be there at all. So, the big stick piece. I may start walking with a big start in my arms, kind of like a limbo bar, so that cars have to divert around me to avoid scratching their cars. I'm thinking that at least might work: if there's a chance of the car being ruined they might give me a little more room....

I am definitely, in this case, not living la vida fearless....these drivers scare me....Jan http://www.tobeyourbest.net/

 Two Days Later

Well it's now Easter Sunday. The sun is shining and it's beautiful here. Yesterday I walked 4 km along the main drag here and then did a further 3 along the waterfront trail when we got home from Easter dinner with all my family. I didn't really feel like doing the last 3 km but if I waited and added it onto today that would make it 10km and I don't want to start doing that. I had a cool idea with this walk. For every kilometre I walk I am paying myself $1 so, if I do 7km each day I put $7 into my saving fund. When I'm done I'm going on a trip with the money I've saved....Another incentive to see this through. Lunchtime now and then off for a full 7km walk all at once. The puppy is already waiting....Living la vida fearless, Jan

 The next day

It's sunny today and it's Good Friday. There are a lot of people out and about in my neighbourhood wanting to just be near the lake and enjoy the time off. I clocked out how far 7 km would be in my car so now I know on the route I decided to take. My husband, son and puppy decided to join me so I had some great company. Off we go to a nice quiet, sort of, street nearby that stretches for almost 3 km, strewn with mature trees, big expansive yards and expensive homes. We took about 2 hours, just a little less, and the walk was easy. Tomorrow will be the next leg of this 1000 km walk so now I'm down to 986 km....Wahoo! Living la vida fearless, Jan

 The first of many steps

Well Happy Spring everybody. As promised, on the day of the spring equinox, I started my 1000km walk. I will walk 7 km each day, or more, until the fall equinox which is actually more than 1000km. It's a promise I made to myself and I want to raise some funds for a much needed charity in my area.
I got up at 6am to a dark morning and a sunny puppy. We still have out daughter's dog and she is always ready for a walk so off we went. It's still cold and icy here so the walking was a little tough at times, especially through the waterfront trail, but it was ok. I had the big, beautiful full moon on one side of me getting ready to call it a night and the bright sun just beginning to peek through the clouds and say good morning on the other side of me. I was going to take a picture of me on my first step but I couldn't find the camera....So, only 997 km to go and then I'm done. Care to join in? Living la vida fearless, Jan
